Projections - Valkenburg

In 2021, Werff Design realized projection mapping on three different objects in Valkenburg: the Geulpoort, a homeowners' association office, and the Bijstandskerk.
Three separate projects, each with its own surface and context, but with one goal: to add atmosphere to the Christmas market and the light festival.
Atmosphere over storytelling
The approach of this project was clear: no extensive storylines, but visual support of the environment.
During a Christmas market combined with a light festival, everything revolves around the experience. Visitors walk around, discover, and experience. Projection mapping should not dominate this, but rather enhance it.
By applying subtle projections in multiple locations, a kind of visual common thread is created throughout the event.
Each object requires a different approach
What makes this project interesting is precisely the difference between the locations.
De Geulpoort requested visuals that work on a layered structure.
The HOA office offered a sleeker, flatter canvas.
The Bijstandskerk provided space for larger, fluid movements
Instead of applying a single concept, we looked at what works best for each location.
Consistent style, without dependency
Although the projects were independent of each other, a similar visual style was deliberately chosen.
Consider:
colorful animations
abstract patterns
smooth transitions
a leisurely pace
This ensures recognition, without the projects needing to be thematically connected.
Creating atmosphere with minimal means
For these projects as well, it held true: you don't need a complex setup to make an impact.
By handling:
content that is widely applicable
efficient technical setups
and clear visual choices
you can still create a strong atmosphere with relatively few resources.
Projection mapping as a mood setter
These three projects in Valkenburg show how projection mapping works perfectly as an atmosphere creator within an event.
Not as the main act, but as a visual layer that:
strengthens the environment
visitors surprised
and makes the whole thing more attractive
It is precisely that subtle role that makes it so effective.
Werff Design & projection mapping
Whether it concerns a single facade or multiple separate locations: the power of projection mapping lies in the right application.
At Werff Design, it is all about what works in the context of the event. Sometimes that is grand and narrative, and sometimes simple, abstract, and atmospheric.
Do you want to visually enhance your event without overcomplicating it?
Projection mapping offers a surprising number of possibilities.
