During the Lichtkunstfestival Slot Zeist in 2020, Slot Zeist became the stage for Jazzism, a projection mapping show developed by Werffdesign.
Jazzism is a building projection centered around the atmosphere and energy of jazz. Using 3D projection mapping, the facade of Slot Zeist was digitally reconstructed and used as a canvas for animation. The building moves in sync with the music, continuously shifting in style, rhythm, and character to reflect different jazz influences.
The show takes you on a visual journey through various jazz styles, each with its own character and dynamics. Think of:
Rhythmic animations inspired by different jazz genres
Playful and creative visuals that respond to the music
A striking scene featuring a dancing octopus, inspired by an underwater-like musical piece
Fluid color compositions that visually enhance the music
The result is a vibrant form of light art in which music and architecture fully come together.
The technical foundation
or this projection mapping on Slot Zeist, not only projection was used, but also additional lighting. Alongside the animations on the facade, multiple lights were placed around the building, moving in sync with the visuals.
Behind the scenes, everything focused on:
Precisely measuring and mapping the facade
Developing a 3D model as the foundation for the animation
Synchronizing visuals, music, and lighting
Integrating external lights as an Ambilight-like system around the projection
This combination created a complete experience in which not only the facade, but the entire environment became part of the show.
Why this projection mapping stands out
For those searching for terms like projection mapping, building projection, light art, or facade projection, Jazzism is a strong example of what is possible within event design and visual storytelling.
It translates music into visual animation on architecture
It combines projection mapping with dynamic lighting
It enhances the experience by involving the entire space
It is applicable to festivals, events, and brand activations
Jazzism shows how projection mapping and light art can completely transform a location into an immersive audiovisual experience.
This project highlights the importance of balancing creativity and technology. By perfectly aligning music, animation, and light, it creates a lasting experience that brings a building to life in a unique way.
